DURBAN FASHION FAIR 2019 – Evolution Is Elementary

Picture1
The fashion season has begun, and eThekwini kicked off with a bang.

Durban Fashion Fair together with eThekwini municipality hosted yours suitably for yet another exhilarating week filled with all things fashion, business, youth empowerment and of course the glitz and glam. This year, I had the honour and privilege of being a judge alongside Edcon specialist buyer Trevor Ntombela and fashion & lifestyle influencer, Nolusindiso Mchunu. This year’s theme was Evolution is Elementary and I must say, all the designers came out guns blazing with their collections. Here are some of the collection that grabbed my attention:

House of St. Luke

He has always been the wonder-boy of menswear in eThekwini and he continued to show us why he is one of the best in Mzansi’s menswear division. Change is good and yes, he gave us a breath of fresh air from his collection which was inspired by grey clouds of rain. It was a cohesive collection with shades of grey, expanding his talent by showing a mixture of sportlux and streetstyle.

Kazadi Wilson

One of the award winners of DFF2019, Kazadi gave a twist of suiting and the tailoring was exceptional. Classic and timeless fit on models, it was like the garments wear specifically tailored for them. Each jacket and top had its own uniqueness, yet each piece of the collection could still be interchanged, mix-matched and still get an African sartorial sophistication.

Athenkosi is one of the rising stars of Kwa Zulu Natal and Mzansi’s menswear league. After an amazing journey on local fashion television program RAW SILK, he came to DFF and stamped his authority as he claimed the menswear collection of the week. It was tailoring on steroids, experimenting with exotic fabrics yet carefully paying attention to detail and luxury. Breaking rules of sartorial conformity.

Sicelinhlanhla Ngcobo

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, Sicelinhlanhla wowed us with a menswear haute couture collection. A samurai warrior inspired collection, he didn’t create clothes but wearable art. Watching his collection, was like listening to Andreas Vollenweider. From his previous co-created collection to this, he showed consistency and growth. He continued to tell a story through his designs.

Denim is one of the most iconic fabrics and jeans have been around since the 19th centuries and for all these years they’ve been pretty much the same. Young creatives such as Sihle Khoza are disrupting the status quo, of how things are done and how clothes are worn. This young jean-maker rocked up with a collection that’s refreshing to watch. See how torn-up jeans became fashionable. He gave us the future of fashionable ways of wearing jeans, as he rebelled a range of deconstructed denims. “Don’t wait to be famous to take risks, do it now!” – Sihle Khoza, Designer – Vyagor Louvre.

For the years spent in the fashion world learning new things, I found my signature and it has been suits and stuff like that. However, in this journey I have learned to appreciate craftsmanship. Africans are talented, and I had the pleasure to witness that talent in eThekwini. This season of DFF was arguably the year of the underdogs. Well done to all the designers and to all the models for doing justice to the garments. Thanks to Thobelani Mdletshe Photography for the memorable moments capture during the DFF2019. Finally, a huge thank you to Durban Fashion Fair and eThekwini municipality for inviting yours suitably.

Until next time, stay fashionable

  1. Splendid writing. This was a hell of a show. I would have liked to see more of the house of St. Luke and Athenkosi because of their take on the theme and the products are phenomenal and refreshing. Some technics are not my favorites but the sticking and lining was very well executed throughout. Well done to Durban 🙏🏾
