Like any other year there will be a bit of this and that, which includes ups and downs. Before we get the year running let’s take a moment and look back at moments and highlights of 2018.

We kicked things off in Sandton with the first fashion week in Jozi for the year, attending South African Fashion week SS 18. While embracing the fall season, we were already getting inspirations for the next summer from both the OGs’ and the debutants of Mzansi’s high fashion runways.

We also got the opportunity to visit the coast to witness KZN’s finest and raw talent. Durban Fashion Fair continued to produce more and exciting stars in the fashion space and showed growth in becoming another SA’s prime fashion capital.

Yours suitably continued hosting gentlemen from all walks of life in the spirit of sartorialism and dandyism. The gatherings faced their fair share of challenges where some months came and gone without gents meeting as per usual. However, the event grew in strength as other brands who believed in the movement came on board to make Suitable Sunday a success. We made new friends,  business contacts and disrupted traffic as we brought our A-Game of suits and stuff like that.

Like all the other pilgrims travelling afar to sacred and holy lands, myself and other dandies also descended to Italy but not to the Pope’s land. We headed to the city of Florence for what we call the Mecca of Sartorialism. Fortezza Da Basso was the holy temple and of course every dandy that has been there will tell you about the sacred wall. We witnessed an unprecedented scene as one of our own, all the way from South Africa asked his long-time girlfriend for her hand in marriage.

Just when I thought the golfing Gods have turned their backs on me after not being able to play competitive golf due to the back injury, a blessing came in disguise. Even the golfing fraternity thought I left the golfing world for the fashion world, I swung back in style and for a good course. In partnership with Zuri Ladies Golf Club we established a junior golf development in Soweto. We gave kids something they never even dreamed of having or knowing. An opportunity for them to learn the greatest game of all time.

Earlier in the year attending Pitti Uomo trade fair I was welcomed by Eric Mannby of the Swedish menswear fashion magazine, Plaza Uomo. Looking back at the first time I went to Italy, I gate crashed the magazine’s cocktail party and now I received a four-page feature on the very same magazine.Screen Shot 2019-01-04 at 10.07.58
This gate crushing saga didn’t start in Italy, my first time attending the GQ Best Dressed Man awards I was not on the guest list. Good thing I had dressed the part and I was recognized from the GQ Best Dressed Reader contest, I then got smuggled through the gate. Fast-forward to 2018 I got chosen as one of Mzansi’s top ten best dressed men of the year.

What a year it was, and like mentors and coaches would say to their protegees, “there’s always a room for improvement”. Sit back and enjoy the ride as we continue the journey in 2019.

Suitably Yours
