The future of African fashion #AFROFUTURISTIC
The local fashion season is yet again upon up and what a way to kick-start the runway drama with Durban Fashion Fair. Yours suitably was invited at the 2018 DFF under the theme #AFROFUTURISTIC. Let’s see what ETHEKWINI had to give us this season:
Just when everyone thinks denim is just denim, Ande’s collection disrupted the system with a breath of fresh style. A whole new look of ready-to-wear. He gave us everything we’ve never seen on the runway nor on the rags, yet the collection was so clean that every peace can move from the runway and straight to the retail store. The collection was uniformed with a touch of red detailing giving life to the denim.
HOUSE OF ST. LUKE
Arguably Durban’s finest menswear designer and as young as he is, he has given the veteran designers a good run for their money. Mxolisi is already the two-time winner of the DFF Menswear Designers of the year. This year’s collection was nothing less from the previous collection, he gave us greener pastures with a dominance of olive greens. Apart from the collection, I saw maturity in how he styled the collection. Minimalistic at is best, completing the look with the French’s finest beret with a dash of African aesthetics.
KHULEKANI & SICELINHLANHLA
The duo won the Best Mentees for 2018 and I must say, although their collection was absolute black, the future of African Fashion looks bright. Like the saying goes, “once you go black you’ll never go back”. They displayed futuristic samurai look in charcoal black paired with a satin touch to give it a luxurious feel.
MARKHAM X FEDISA
Markham is one of the oldest retail brands in Mzansi which has been faithful for menswear fashion and style. Now they have collaborated with Fedisa, bringing their best fashion students to showcase their talent. The brand has curated all the looks to achieve the best looks that will make their way on the Markham shelves, straight from the runway. Markham is a brand for every men and the collections had the best for every menswear style, from smart-casual; street wear; sports-lux; corporate formal wear and even red-carpet ready.
Another double award-winner scooping Fashion Innovator & Emerging Designer of The Year. This collection epitomized what #AFROFUTURISM is all about. Not something that any Tom; Dic & Harry can wear, not even I can pull these looks but the collection was a masterpiece. A fusion of avant-garde and sports-lux and every design interchangeable and wearable by any gender. Precision tailoring and craftsmanship was out of this world.
This season’s main focus was the future of fashion, and my attention was on the young and upcoming designers. After all they’re the “future of fashion” and the potential of taking local fashion to the world is in their hands. The designs featured above were the best collections to narrate the theme #AFROFUTURISTIC.
We came; we saw; we slayed, but overall fashion was the winner.
Until next time…
